Paywalls are built for people. They check login status, look at cookies to follow a session, then show or hide content based on a subscription. For someone reading in a browser, it works well. Think of a bouncer who knows faces and checks tickets.
AI crawlers don’t follow those steps. They don’t click buttons or bring cookies. They scan links, scrape HTML, and look for weak spots that sit outside the usual flow.
Picture a library with member-only rooms, but an open window around the side. Some AI browsers slip in through public RSS feeds, cached copies on search engines, or mirrors that live on third-party servers. Servers sometimes leave side doors open too. Mobile or print versions of pages may skip the protections used on the main site.
This isn’t about perfect security. It’s about spotting the leaks and seeing why people-first rules break under automation. Publishers are testing machine-readable access rules and payment flows aimed at non-human visitors. Think structured policies, signed requests, and per-request pricing that an agent can understand. Why human-first paywalls leave gaps that automated agents exploit

The x402 protocol puts payment details right in the response so bots know what to do. It works like this:

- Price formatting: each URL or resource has a listed price so bots see exact costs.
- Proof submission: after payment, the bot retries with a signed receipt or token.
- Delivery after verification: the server checks the proof, then serves the premium content.
